Die Arbeit erforscht die Baukonstruktion und Herstellungstechniken wichtiger Gewölbe Balthasar Neumanns. Hierbei werden Besonderheiten und technische Neuerungen in der Wölbkunst Neumanns mit dem in der Barockzeit üblichen Wissensstand verglichen. Den Kern der Forschung bilden verformungsgerechte Aufmaßpläne von acht wichtigen Wölbbauten und deren Analyse, die so für den barocken Gewölbebau bislang noch nicht existieren. Die Ergebnisse zeichnen erstmals ein genaues Bild der bautechnischen Eigenheiten von Balthasar Neumanns Gewölben, das in der Gesamtheit mit den Dachkonstruktionen und den besonderen Widerlagerdispositionen nachvollziehbar wird.     «

The present study investigates the construction and erection techniques associated with some important vaults designed by Balthasar Neumann. Specific features of Neumann’s art of vaulting and his technical innovations are outlined against the backdrop of state-of-the-art knowledge in the baroque period. The core of the research is based on detailed measured drawings of eight important vaulted structures and their analysis, a methodological approach that has not been applied to baroque vaults up till now. The analysis leads to a precise picture of the constructional idiosyncrasies of Neumann’s vaults, including their interaction with the design of the roof structures and the specific abutment situations.     «
