This thesis investigated the flexible conversion of excess variable renewable energy via biomethanation into high-quality substitute natural gas, a long-term energy storage compound without injection restrictions that uses the huge capacity of the existing natural gas grid infrastructure. The anaerobic thermophilic trickle bed reactor set-up proved to be a very efficient energy conversion technology. Grid injection qualities at comparably high methane production rates have been achieved along with an excellent dynamic operational and restart performance.
