Bornavirus (BoDV-1) is a zoonosis in humans, horses, sheep and alpacas that almost always causes fatal encephalitis. BoDV-1 has been known in animals for several hundred years, but has only been identified as a human pathogen since 2018. This study is the first to compare the neuropathology of Bornavirus encephalitis in animals, which has been known for several hundred years, with the recently discovered disease in humans. A first clinical neuropathological comparison of this study shows evidence of changes in immunopathology due to immunosuppressive therapy.
