Fault zones (FZ) are major components of geothermal exploration concepts for the Southern German Upper Jurassic aquifer (UJA), as they form potential water pathways. But their explorational importance with respect to the flow field geometry around a geothermal well and its productivity (PI) is still debated. Based on a large number of highly efficient detailed numerical experiments, this work shows that FZ in the UJA can be hidden in hydraulic data of well tests and still increase PI significantly. Therefore, such hidden FZ can be considered as valuable exploration targets.
