- Gasholders were built in the nineteenth and twentieth century for storage of locally produced coal gas that was used for the public illumination and later also for domestic use. These rising iron structures presented a new kind of industrial architecture that changed the cityscape. The gasholder`s function determined its structure: The development went from the water-sealed gasholder to the waterless or dry gasholder (piston-type gasholder).
