Even today, the impact of telemedicine upon daily clinical routine is already evident in visceral surgery. The establishment of healthcare networks results in an improved collaboration between the outpatient (pre- and postoperative) and in-hospital (surgical) patient care. Currently, electronic health cards for patients and health professional cards are introduced into routine service as essential preconditions for a comprehensive, integrated healthcare procurement. Even more advanced is telemedicine in the treatment of in-house patients. Hospital information systems, preoperative planning on the basis of advanced imaging, interdisciplinary therapy boards and intraoperative teleconsultation have already become state of the art.
