ParaCEST agents make use of high chemical shifts to exploit rapid proton exchange rates in chemical exchange saturation transfer (CEST) MRI. The optimal saturation pulses have been investigated for the paraCEST agent Yb-HPDO3A in the context of pH-mapping. For the same compound, a liposomial drug delivery system was characterized. Additionally, selected paraCEST agents have proven viable for pH-mapping at magnetic field strengths of 1T. Because of their properties, carefully designed paraCEST agents could see clinical use at low field, for pH and functional imaging.
