Straubing and the administrative district Straubing-Bogen are cooperating with the Chair of Engineering Geology of the Technische Universität München in research concerning features of natural landscapes already since 2006, the “Geo-Kulturjahr” (the geo-cultural year). Thereby, the urban geology – formed primarily by the Quaternary sediments of the Danube – in the city of Straubing is in the center of the surveys. North of the city in the administrative district rises the Bavarian Forest, built up by crystalline rocks. To the south the Quaternary units are framed by the Tertiary hills (Tertiäres Hügelland).
The implementation of geologic data in municipal geographic information systems is the focus of research. For this purpose, the Chair of Engineering Geology maintains intensive contact with decision-makers in the municipal administration and the district office. In this context, the present thesis summarizes data from an eight-year project period. In course of numerous theses, among others the Diploma thesis of the author, information on the geological structure but also on “cultural geology” such as the mapping of the use of natural stone have been compiled in cooperation with the administration. During research it became clear that still little data are available for the urban area, especially from a hydrogeological point of view. The same is true for the anthropogenic overprint of the area. For centuries Straubing was a well-known center of the ceramic production. Since the nineteenth century bricks and tiles were manufactured on an industrial scale, for which the rich deposits of loess and brickearth were the basis. These raw material workings, as well as anthropogenic fillings, and the events of World War II have left traces in the urban landscape, which, from an engineering geological perspective, are of utmost importance. Therefore, detailed maps covering these topics have been prepared. By combining all available data from the geo-scientific topic a high-resolution representation of the geological situation of Straubing will now be given for the first time. Specialized data such as the groundwater temperature are included, too, which is of interest mainly in the context of renewable energy and specifically of geothermal energy.
The contemporary presentation of this data with spatial reference is carried out in geographic information systems. Here, the function spectrum of such systems goes far beyond the geographical application. They build a bridge between the image of the real world in map applications and databases, in which the properties of objects are stored. The provision of geoscientific information in support of the municipal administration is a key research area. The development of data models for interoperable use of spatial data is, in the wake of the INSPIRE-directive of the European Union, a now much debated question. Hence, in this thesis a database structure is presented, which takes all important geoscientific data sets for municipal decision-making processes into account. This is also discussed in connection with an appropriate interoperable spatial data provisioning and inter-municipal-regional cooperation in Straubing and in the district of Straubing-Bogen.
Finally, the study describes the three-dimensional representation of geological circumstances in the framework of a 3D-mapping of the Quaternary gravel terraces in the city of Straubing. In addition, application examples from the civil engineering and environmental sector in the municipal planning are presented using 3D GIS.
