The human GESA study examined the effect of maternal obesity with and without gestational diabetes on offspring obesity risk. Selected biomarkers (e.g. insulin, leptin, adiponectin, interleukin 6, C-reactive protein) of maternal and umbilical cord blood were analyzed in relation to infant growth and adipose tissue composition up to the 1st year. Considering the role of the placenta in fetal programming, differentially regulated mRNA and protein expression levels were determined in the Insulin and Wnt signaling pathways of the GESA placentas and evaluated in relation to offspring early obesity risk.
