Escherichia coli O157:H7 EDL933 (EHEC) is an emerging food-borne pathogen. Strand specific RNA sequencing of this strain under various environmental conditions and ribosomal footprinting was applied to distinguish translated and untranslated transcripts. The study revealed that many hypothetical genes are only active under environmental conditions, e.g., on radish sprouts. Additionally, new ncRNAs, non-annotated genes, and numerous overlapping genes could be verified, indicating that the genetic organization of EDL933 is unknown to a significant degree.
