3D functional imaging is commonly used in cancer diagnosis today, however in terms of size and acquisition times conventional tomographic systems are not suitable for intraoperative use. To fill this gap in imaging modalities, freehand SPECT has been developed recently, where a hand-held nuclear probe is combined with an optical tracking system, enabling 3D reconstruction similar to conventional tomography. However as there is no fixed acquisition geometry the system matrix for reconstruction has to be computed on the fly using ad-hoc models of the detection physics.
