This dissertation analyzes the relationship between labor market inactivity and health under consideration of institutional, occupational and social factors. It consists of an introduction and four empirical studies based on micro-level data from the Survey of Health, Ageing and Retirement in Europe (SHARE) and harmonized data from other countries. The first two studies concentrate on the transition into retirement and the question whether working conditions and social networks influence the effect of retirement on health. The remaining chapters discuss the determinants and the health consequences of disability insurance uptake.      «

Diese Dissertation betrachtet den Zusammenhang zwischen Arbeitsmarktinaktivität und Gesundheit unter Berücksichtigung institutioneller, berufsbezogener und sozialer Faktoren. Sie besteht aus einem einleitenden Kapitel und vier empirischen Untersuchungen basierend auf Mikrodaten des „Survey of Health, Ageing and Retirement in Europe“ (SHARE) und harmonisierten Daten aus anderen Ländern. Die ersten beiden Untersuchungen analysieren den Übergang vom Arbeitsleben in den Ruhestand und beantworten die Frage, ob Arbeitsbedingungen und soziale Kontakte den Effekt von Ruhestand auf die Gesundheit beeinflussen. Die anderen beiden Kapitel diskutieren die Bedingungen und die Konsequenzen des Bezugs von Erwerbsminderungsrente.      «
