In the present work it was investigated whether selected plant extracts and individual polyphenolic compounds are able to inhibit intestinal glucose transporters (SGLT1, GLUT2) and can in turn reduce the glycemic response to carbohydrate intake as a contribution to prevention of diabetes. Extracts from apple, onion, curly kale and grapevine could effectively inhibit human and mouse SGLT1 and were demonstrated to reduce glucose absorption in mouse intestine. In humans, after an oral carbohydrate challenge, modest effects of some extract combinations on blood glucose levels could be achieved.
