The fasciocutaneous radial forearm flap is used for soft tissue reconstruction despite frequently discussed donor site morbidity. In this study the functional long-term outcome and blood flow conditions of the donor region are examined together with postoperative life quality. The O2C-diagnostic device enables the noninvasive assessment of oxygen supply in the vascularized tissue. Furthermore, motoric function, sensoric and temperature sensitivity were determined. The results of the O2C measurements show significantly lower values in the donor area in combination with a reduced superficial and deep flow perfusion of the donor arm compared with the corresponding contralateral region. In coherence with these findings motoric function, sensoric and temperature sensitivity were reduced not significantly. Similar no evidence of life quality restriction was found. In conclusion our results confirm the suitability of the radial forearm flap for microsurgical tissue transfer.
