Abstract:
This work presents the results of researching the interface between people, space and objects in an extra-terrestrial environment in order to retrieve new potentials and design issues. American and Russian space habitats, that hosted a minimum crew of two, with mission lengths exceeding 30 days, were selected as case studies (Apollo, Salyut, Skylab, Shuttle, Mir, and ISS). The purpose of such habitats has been to establish living & working space for humans. Therefore a comparative analysis focusing on human activities (SLEEP, HYGIENE, FOOD and WORK) within a built environment was chosen as a new method for this work. In addition to the available data, Astronauts’ personal experiences have been integrated in the evaluation. Structured interviews with seven astronauts were conducted with a special focus on human activity, from which new facts emerged. The result of the study is expressed as design directions for each category.

Die vorliegende Arbeit erforscht die Schnittstelle zwischen Mensch, Raum und Objekt in einer erdfremden Umgebung. Am Beispiel der Architektur im Weltraum werden neue Potentiale und gestaltungsrelevante Aspekte überprüft. Alle realisierten amerikanischen und russischen Weltraumhabitate, die von mindestens zwei Personen mindestens 30 Tage lang bewohnt waren, werden untersucht und verglichen.
