The direct and indirect costs of 277 schizophrenic outpatients treated by psychiatrists, who were randomised in an intervention group with quality management or in a control group with treatment as usual, were surveyed for 18 months. At the end of the trial the direct and indirect costs of the intervention group with quality treatment were much lower, but not statistically significant, than the costs of the control group, although the intervention group needed additional costs related to the quality management project.
