In the present study, comprehensive quantitative data on the metabolism and the bioavailability of piceid, the predominant form of the polyphenol resveratrol in red wine, are presented for the first time. In a human intervention trial, it was shown that piceid is present in plasma and urine after a single oral administration in the form of resveratrol metabolites (sulfates and glucuronides) exclusively. In addition, the active transport mechanisms, which are involved in the tissue distribution of resveratrol and resveratrol metabolites, were identified in cell-culture and animal studies. Furthermore, results from in vitro studies demonstrated evidence for various structure-dependent bioactivities of resveratrol metabolites.
