Resilience and Its Influence on Cardiovascular Recovery After Maximum Exertion in Young Athletes

Abstract:
Regular physical activity during childhood and adolescence promotes long-term cardiovascular health (Lavie et al., 2019). However, competitive youth sports often involve training intensities beyond recommended levels, raising concerns about potential maladaptive cardiovascular responses (Little et al., 2023; Sabato et al., 2016). In the Munich Cardiovascular Adaptations in Young Athletes (MuCAYAs) study, N= 251 competitive youth academy and squad athletes (10–17 years) are followed for three years to examine these responses and explore the role of biopsychosocial moderators. Being psychologically resilient means having a lower vulnerability to adverse experiences, such as stress. Psychological resilience, the ability to positively adjust in the face of considerable adversity, was selected as a psychological variable because previous studies have shown positive relations between resilience and heart rate variability (HRV), a well-established marker of autonomic regulation. Still, the role of psychological resilience in cardiovascular recovery (CR) following maximum exertion remains unclear, particularly among youth athletes. We therefore aim to investigate whether resilience is associated with CR after maximum exertion. The study is a longitudinal, within-subject study. HRV was assessed at rest and during a 5-minute recovery period after maximal exertion on an ergometer. We quantified CR using the area-under-the-curve (nAUC). We assessed resilience with the RS-11 (von Eisenhart Rothe, 2013). Physical activity (min/week), body mass index (BMI), age, and sex were included as covariates. We applied Spearman correlation and multiple linear regression for statistical testing. In the preliminary analyses based on the first measurement wave (year 1), no significant associations emerged between resilience and resting HRV (RMSSD; p = .10) or CR (p = .58). Although the regression model was significant, resilience was not an independent predictor of CR (p = .54), suggesting that its contribution is negligible. The covariates resting HRV (p < .001) and age (p = .007) were significant. No evidence has been found for an association between resilience and CR following maximal exertion. However, resting HRV and age were significantly associated with CR, indicating that baseline autonomic function and developmental stages might be relevant correlates. Nevertheless, causal inferences cannot be drawn, and additional physiological and psychological influences cannot be ruled out. The goal of MUCAYAs is to examine possible long-term effects of resilience on CR. Future analysis will use heart rate recovery (instead of nAUC-HRV) as an additional outcome variable and longitudinal data across all three measurement time points to better capture intraindividual changes over time
