Due to its high vitamin C content, orange juice is commonly believed to support resistance to common viral infections. However, it is still unknown which of the orange juice compounds affect the immune system. In vitro experiments using human buccal cells revealed anti-inflammatory effects of the aroma active compound alpha-terpineol. This result could be verified by ex vivo experiments, while in in vivo studies pro-inflammatory effects of alpha-terpineol were shown. These pro-inflammatory effects refered to metabolization reactions of alpha-terpineol in the human body.     «
