To cope with the high competition within the German supply chain of milk the former isolated management of single firms and the optimization of internal processes should be replaced by a vertical comprehensive management encompassing each member of the supply chain. In this context, Efficient Consumer Response (ECR) is seen as a successful supply chain strategy for the grocery industry. This paper provides an overview, which instruments of the ECR concept are already implemented in dairy companies and which of them are suitable for different strategic groups of dairy companies to gain competitiveness. To that end dairy companies were surveyed about their preparedness and degree of implementation of ECR.
