Based on the systemergonomic evaluation of the driving task performed on the vehicle guidance level, the requirements for driver assistance were derived. An interaction metaphor for the longitudinal and transversal assistance has been developed as the result of performed research. In this metaphor driver and assistance system interact in a cooperative way. The underlying cooperative concept of the metaphor is realized in various implementations for experimental evaluation and further improvement in a driving simulator. A summative evaluation with two final experiments was done, that shows very promising results in improving traffic safety and driver behavior.
