In this dissertation, I research the practice of category avoidance, which describes purposive efforts to delay or deflect processes of categorization. I conduct three studies surrounding category avoidance: First, I highlight the general importance of categorization to show that audiences penalize categorical recombinations. Second, I research how category avoidance is employed by organizations. Third, I quantitatively assess the socio-cognitive mechanisms of the categorization process with the objective to understand how thus category avoidance may be facilitated.    «
