- The core challenge tackled by this thesis is integrating edge and cloud computing as a unified computing platform. In particular, the research effort branches into three tightly interwoven topics: domain-specific applications, platform orchestration, and resource provisioning. The main contributions are a novel orchestration platform for unikernels tailored for IoT and edge networks and an edge-cloud resource provisioning algorithm for latency-sensitive applications.

- Die zentrale Herausforderung, die in dieser Arbeit angegangen wird, ist die Integration von Edge- und Cloud-Computing als eine einheitliche Computing-Plattform. Die Forschungsarbeit gliedert sich insbesondere in drei miteinander verwobene Themen: domänenspezifische Anwendungen, Plattform-Orchestrierung und Ressourcenbereitstellung. Die wichtigsten Beiträge sind eine neuartige Orchestrierungsplattform für Unikernel und ein Edge-Cloud-Bereitstellungsalgorithmus für Echtzeitanwendungen.
