In the Shades of the Rings - Experiences of Interpersonal Violence in Elite Sports

Abstract:
When pursuing their Olympic dream athletes have to make a strong commitment to their sport and being an athlete. This commitment entails sacrifices in other areas of life such as education, voca-tion, family, or friend. On the individual level, this may result in an “athlete identity” and possibly an identity foreclosure. On the social level, the athlete’s commitment is often matched by their coach-es´ and very close friendships have been shown to develop (Gaedicke et al., 2021; Jowett, 2017). The addition of a strong hierarchal structure often present in elite sports leads to a frame of imbal-anced power, which can lead to the abuse of this power an maltreatment of athletes. Maltreatment is understood as an umbrella term (World Health Organization, 2020) and can be distinguished into different types: physical harm, sexual harm, psychological harm, and neglect (Stirling, 2009)..Recent studies show a prevalence of experiencing maltreatment within elite sports similar to other well-known “risk-groups” (Gaedicke et al., 2021; Ohlert et al., 2021; Willson et al., 2022). While physical and sexual harm appear to make it to headlines, psychological harm (including ver-bal behaviours, denial of attention or support and neglect) is just as deleterious (Stirling & Kerr, 2008). Studies show that the simple term "communication" is among the most frequently reported aspects of experiences of psychological harm (Ohlert et al., 2021; Willson et al., 2022). It may be concluded that poor or even violent communication behavior could be a predecessor or predictor for more severe forms of maltreatment – pointing us to targets for the prevention of the dark shades of athletes’´ commitment to their Olympic dream.
