Our mixed methods (narrative interviews; group discussions; quantitative online survey) study examines the motivation of physicians in training as specialists in general practice to open their own practice. In addition, we wondered how motivations change during the vocational training. In a synchronic perspective motivations are highly differentiated on the one hand, on the other hand they are clearly gender-specific.
