Stand-alone CAx systems are highly developed, yet the potential of CAD-integrated simulation and the subsequent utilization of its outcome are vague to the greatest possible extent. The absence of documented use-cases, methods, procedural models and coordination of CAD-integrated simulation within the design process further contributes to this challenging situation. Personal involvement of engineers, such as the fear of responsibility or of losing expertise, can be added. The mentioned facets of integrating simulation into the design process make the analysis and questioning of the potential of such applications inevitable. With regard to these circumstances, we will present an evaluation of CAD-integrated simulation, its benefits and the possible utilization of its outcome. Based on the evaluation, we point out certain phases of the product development process that are most adequate for the application, and thereby define conceivable scenarios of processes using CAD-integrated simulation.     «
