Computational design synthesis supports the innovation process in its crucial part, namely the synthesis of new product concepts comprising the creative step itself, the conception and postulation of possibly new solutions to solve a problem. Our approach for a design synthesis framework is based on the combination of design grammars (vocabulary and rules) and search (synthesis control). To move beyond prior work both in scope and level of support for innovation, two key research issues are identified: First, to expand the range of applications through the consideration not only of mechanical but also electronic components and software (i.e. mechatronics). Second, to expand the scope of knowledge considered through the inclusion of dynamic knowledge models.     «
