This work shows how to enable software applications and scenarios in computational science and engineering (CSE) to efficiently run on the Grid. To reduce the Grid know-how and programming effort typically required for this task, we developed GridSFEA, a novel framework for numerical simulations in Grid environments. With this simulation framework, we provide the computational scientist, both developers and users of high-performance computing applications, a complementary easy-to-use instrument for working on the Grid. GridSFEA focuses on and simplifies tasks specific to capacity computing, such as parameter studies or long simulation runs. Although realized on top of the Globus Toolkit, this framework is flexible and interoperable with both Globus and UNICORE Grid middleware, e.g. The interactions with the middleware are transparent to the user and to his applications. Hereby, we enable CSE application scenarios to run on Grids with minimal or even without changes of the source code, the development and performance overhead introduced by our lightweight approach being very low. In this work, we demonstrate the full functionality, efficiency, and usability of GridSFEA. For that, we present several successful scenarios such as parallel computational fluid dynamics or molecular dynamics simulations on production Grids.     «

Diese Arbeit zeigt, wie Softwareanwendungen und Szenarien des Wissenschaftlichen Rechnens effizient auf dem Grid ausgeführt werden können. Um das Grid Know-how und den Programmieraufwand, die für diese Aufgabe notwendig sind, zu reduzieren, haben wir GridSFEA entwickelt, eine neue Umgebung für numerische Simulationen auf dem Grid. Mit dieser Umgebung stellen wir Forschern im Wissenschaftlichen Rechnen – sowohl Entwicklern als auch Nutzern von Anwendungen auf Hochleistungsrechnern – ein ergänzendes, einfach zu bedienendes Werkzeug für das Arbeiten auf dem Grid zur Verfügung. GridSFEA fokusiert auf und vereinfacht spezifische Aufgaben des Capacity Computings, wie Parameterstudien oder lange Simulationsläufe. Obwohl auf Globus Toolkit aufgesetzt, ist die Umgebung flexibel und interoperabel sowohl mit Globus, als auch z.B. mit der UNICORE Grid-Middleware. Die Interaktionen mit der Zwischenschicht sind transparent für den Nutzer und seine Anwendungen. Hierdurch ermöglichen wir das Ausführen der Anwendungsszenarien auf dem Grid, mit kleinen - oder sogar gar keinen - Änderungen an dem Quelltext, und das mit geringem Entwicklungsaufwand und geringen Leistungseinbußen. Im Rahmen dieser Arbeit beweisen wir die volle Funktionalität, Effizienz und Benutzerfreundlichkeit von GridSFEA, indem wir einige erfolgreiche Szenarien vorstellen, wie parallele Strömungsmechanik- oder Molekulardynamik-Simulationen auf dem Grid.     «
