The interaction between different modifications of tricalcium aluminate (Ca3Al2O6), the most reactive constituent of ordinary Portland cement (OPC), and different structured polycarboxylate-based superplasticizers was studied. For this purpose, three clearly defined binder model systems, based on pure Ca3Al2O6, white cement and OPC respectively, were prepared. For the synthesis of the pure Ca3Al2O6-phases and OPC clinker, it was essential to control the ratio of cubic, orthorhombic and monoclinic Ca3Al2O6 contained in the material, by incorporation of different amounts of sodium. The results show that polycarboxylates increase the rate of ettringite formation as well as the length/thickness ratio of ettringite crystals when Na2O-doping rises.
