Im Zentrum der Promotionsarbeit steht die wissenschaftshistorische Dekonstruktion der Krankheitsentität Hysterie im Zeitraum von 1875 bis 1915 im deutschsprachigen Raum. Anhand der „klassischen“ Frauenkrankheit Hysterie werden die Funktionen von Paradigmenwechseln innerhalb der Gynäkologie, der Psychiatrie/Neurologie und der Psychoanalyse sowie die in diesem Zeitraum stattfindende professions-politische Auseinandersetzung um die jeweilige Deutungsmacht der Hysterie wissenschaftshistorisch und diskursanalytisch untersucht. Mit dieser Arbeit wird gezeigt, dass Krankheit nicht allein ein naturwissenschaftlich zu verstehendes Phänomen darstellt, sondern immer auch ein Phänomen, welches aus dem Nexus von gesellschaftlicher Betrachtung, naturwissenschaftlicher „Tatsachenherstellung“ und professionspolitischem Kalkül zu verstehen ist. Die Offenlegung des Diskurses über Krankheit und Gesundheit stellt einen zentralen Aspekt dieser Arbeit dar.      «

This dissertation seeks to deconstruct hysteria as a disease category from 1875 until 1915 in the German speaking lands. Against the backdrop of the female malady hysteria, the divergent paradigm shifts within the medical disciplines of gyneocology and obstetrics, psychiatry/neurology and psychoanalysis are put under scrutiny. Furthermore the ensuing contested battles and rivalries between the different medical professions are analyzed from the vantage point of the history and philosophy of sciences and discourse analysis. This dissertation discloses the fact that a disease category is not merely a scientific fact but rather a phenomenon that is derivative of societal ascription, scientific discourse and power relations within the medical professions. To unveil these elements as constitutive for the discourse on health and illness represents a central topos of this work.      «
