The goal of the work was to investigate to which extend the dynamic characteristics of lean premixed flames from single burner test configurations differentiate from those found in typical industrial multi-burner combustors. Therefore, the flame transfer function of a lean premixed swirl burner was measured in a single and an annular combustion chamber. The results have shown that substantial differences exist between the two configurations. The reason for these was found in the different flow field characteristics: in the single burner case the expanding swirling flow attaches to the walls of the combustor, whereas in the annular configuration this effect does not occur. Based on these results, a new theory for designing single burner tests was developed such that the aerodynamic similarity with the multi-burner annular combustor is improved and thus ensures similar dynamic flame characteristics in the two combustor configurations.
