There are about 117 000 strokes each year in Germany. The risk of recurrent stroke in survivors is estimated at up to 15%. The cerebral infarction frequently represents the initial clinical manifestation of a generalized atherosclerotic disease bearing an extensive risk of further extracerebral complications.
