Results from industrial size and shape optimizations of car bodies are given here, which include multi-disciplinary optimizations (several crash cases, structural dynamics and statics), response surface approaches, gauge and shape optimization and a complete workflow of topology, shape and gauge optimization. An evaluation of algorithms for gauge optimization originating from a large benchmark study performed at BMW is discussed and the transfer to real shape optimizations based on a implicitly parameterized FE modeling via SFE CONCEPT is presented. Further research is required on the algorithmic level especially for shape and topology optimizations and on further applications in other the fields of car body design (e.g. acoustics). The need for simplified models to reduce computational effort and a hybrid approach is addressed.      «
