This book is the product of an one-semester seminar dedicated to the topic of robots and emotion. The seminar Machine Intelligence is lectured at the Chair of Data Processing and constitutes an elective course in the curriculum of the Master of Science in Electrical and Computer Engineering, which is offered by the Faculty of Electrical and Computer Engineering of the Technical University of Munich (TUM). During the one-semester course students weekly meet for 2 hours in order to discuss and work on the subject. The workload is divided into group discussions and team work. Students have to read, write, review and present their findings on a weekly basis. To this end new digital e-learning tools and methods were employed along with discussion styles such as world-cafe or speed-dating discussions. Presentations were given as Pecha Kuchas 1 , which depict highly precise and condensed presentation sessions, while also creating a spontaneous and fun atmosphere. Throughout the seminar participating students should learn fundamental aspects of scientific research along with honing the skills in oral and written communication in a scientific or technical field. The intention for the students in the course is to develop ideas and paths for future research in the field leading towards insights and methods necessary to design and implement intelligent systems in the broader sense of the word. In a total of eight trend reports, students present different perspectives on the coincidence of robots and emotions, analyze trends, identify key drivers as well as challenges, and point out future research directions. The topics include applications of emotions in robots, identification of human emotions, technical aspects of implementing emotions in robots or learning algorithms, and benefits of emotional robots for human-robot interaction.     «
