For a realistic and accurate description of corrosion progress, spatial variability of corrosion processes must be accounted for, in particular when evaluating existing structures. A main problem in estimating the spatial correlation structure is the lack of data. In most studies that account for the spatial variability of concrete material properties, values of the correlation length, and hence the discretisation scheme, are based on practical considerations and experience. This paper presents an analysis of spatial variability of potential mapping results to support the modeling of spatial correlation. Potential mapping is a widely used inspection method for detection of ongoing corrosion in reinforced concrete structures. With the aid of potential measurement results a structure can be divided into corroding and non-corroding areas. Therefore, the spatial variability of corroding areas can be described indirectly through the spatial variability of potential mapping, as demonstrated in this paper by the analysis of potential data obtained from bridge decks.     «
