- Abstract:
- Incumbents frequently source technology by acquiring startups. We introduce a novel categorization of such acquisitions by distinguishing those aimed at improving product performance and those that add new functionality. We argue that performance-focused acquisitions occur earlier in a target's life cycle than functionality-focused ones, and that the deal value of the former is higher at comparable target maturity stages. We find support for our hypotheses and derive management implications.
