An integrated numerical design process for conceptual and preliminary design of unmanned aerial vehicles tailored for optimal fulfillment of predefined mission tasks will be introduced. A numerical multidisciplinary aircraft sizing method is implemented for creating consistent designs of flying platforms which are then evaluated by virtually performing sample missions using a mission simulation tool specifically implemented for this task. A genetic algorithm is used to vary geometry and payload sensor parameters in order to create an aircraft design optimally tailored to achieve the best mission performance possible. The method is implemented in a modular design environment providing the ability to use different calculation methods for different disciplines during the design process, e.g. aerodynamics, mass prediction or propulsion system layout.     «
