Coastal altimetry has achieved important milestones in the recent years. The new Delay-Doppler altimeters, such as Cryosat-2, and the availability of reprocessed standard altimetry dataset, such as the Adaptive Leading Edge Subwaveform (ALES) retracked dataset, are increasing the quality and the quantity of sea level retrievals in coastal areas. This work aims at showing two case studies in which coastal altimetry data are beneficial for the understanding of sea level variability at a regional and sub-regional scale. The North Sea/Baltic Sea (NSBS) intersection and the Indonesian seas are chosen as test areas. The main focus is on the seasonal sea level variations: The annual cycle increases towards the coast in correspondence with coastal currents, while sub-basin variations in seasonal variability are seen in the Indonesia Seas due to the path of the Kelvin waves at monsoon transitions and in NSBS due to differences in the steric component.      «
