The range of applications of wood in buildings has expanded greatly in recent years. Numerous examples show a usage of wood in both new buildings and reconstructions. Moreover, wood has recently been used as the main structural material in multistory buildings. However, the percentage of buildings made of timber in Germany has not significantly increased. The aim of this theses is to identify those barriers that hinder a greater usage of wood in the construction industry. It will spe-cifically focus on multistory timber buildings.
First, the characteristics of timber construction and the challenges of building and planning with wood are presented. A list of current multistory timber construction projects in Germany is com-piled. The architects, engineers and building constructers involved in the analyzed projects were asked to participate in a survey about the topic. Most of them consider that improvements in the professional expertise of all parties involved in the projects are necessary. In particular, they view that a greater range of education in this field is highly necessary. This theses also examines the question of where the reasons for a relatively high price of timber buildings lie, and which fields of activity are particularly important to eliminate the technical and economic challenges.
Based on the results of questionnaire a summary of the identified challenges was gathered, in order to show which action fields are necessary. For example, a timber building association is of funda-mental importance. A possible organization of such an association was developed in broad terms. In addition, the existing programs at universities in the field of timber buildings were analyzed. Moreover, suggestions were made to support a positive image of timber buildings in public.
