This work presents ongoing investigations of optimization of rotor systems in aero engines. A non-linear constrained optimization problem of shaft mass minimization is considered. Design variables are inner radius and wall thickness of shaft sections. Constraints are imposed on torsional and equivalent stresses, natural frequencies, and design variables. A gradient projection method is applied to solve the sizing optimization problem. Predictions of stresses and natural frequencies are obtained by the in-house FEM code. The developed optimization environment is applied to the free power turbine of a turboprop engine.
