This dissertation concerns itself with the performance optimization and cost reduction in German hospitals. Based on a thorough analysis of the theoretical and empirical framework a concept was elaborated that enables a typologisation of the heterogenic hospital market and a subsequent deduction of type-specific recommendations for action. Within this typologisation, hospitals may be differentiated based on the independent variables size-oriented complexity, service-oriented complexity, entrepreneurial degree and external pressure for action. Hospitals can then be clustered depending on the characteristic of the respective variables. The concept also includes action fields for the optimization of hospitals. These concern the service portfolio, the organization, the processes as well as the support activities such as the logistics and the procurement. Each action field offers different options for optimization. The selection of a suitable option depends on the typologisation of the respective hospital.
