Titel:
Peer influence on managerial honesty: The role of transparency and expectation
Abstract:
The authors investigate peer influence on managerial honesty under varying levels of transparency. People tend to adopt dishonest more easily than honest behavior. The study finds that partial transparency reinforces this asymmetry in reporting as it gives managers additional room for motivated reasoning. It highlights the role of (disappointed) expectations in fueling dishonesty. The findings warn firms that especially partial transparency may spread dishonesty more than honesty.
