Architektur als soziale Praxis aufzufassen, fokussiert anstelle ästhetisierter Bauten die gesellschaftliche Bedingtheit und normative Wirkungsweise von Architektur (hier im engeren Sinn einer institutionell verfaßten, professionalisierten Kulturtechnik betrachtet). Das Forschungsfeld Vorarlberg setzt als europäischer “hot spot” Zeitgenössischer Architektur seit den 1980er Jahren bauästhetische Maßstäbe. Im Land selbst tritt avancierte Architektur weniger als künstlerische Avantgarde, denn als etablierte gesellschaftliche Institution mit betonter Nahbeziehung zum Bauhandwerk in Erscheinung. Die wissenssoziologische Analyse qualitativer Interviews mit Akteuren des Baugeschehens bildet die Grundlage der Studie. Sie dokumentiert soziofunktionelle Rollen, in die Architektur gegenwärtig gesetzt wird und rückt nicht zuletzt den (theoretisch und empirisch vernachlässigten) ländlichen Raum in den Fokus einer aktuellen Architektursoziologie.      «

Observing architecture as a social practise, focuses on the social dependency and normative effect of architecture instead of aestheticized constructions. Architecture is here understood as an institutionally composed and professionalized cultural technique. Vorarlberg as the field of research sets standards as European hot spot for contemporary architecture since the 1980s. In the region itself, advanced architecture becomes visible less as an artistic avant-garde, but more as an established social institution with a close connection to handicraft. A sociology of knowledge based analysis of qualitative interviews with protagonists from the building and construction scene forms the basis of the study. It documents socio-functional roles in which architecture nowadays is set and last but not least puts the (theoretically and empirically neglected) rural area in the focus of a current architectural sociology.     «
